Int/Adv DaVinci Resolve

What this workshop will cover

  • How our eyes perceive images and colour

  • Introductory to the Resolve node tree and how nodes work

  • Colour management within resolve

  • How to start using the colour wheels

  • Basic rotoscoping, enhance or remove objects

  • Sky replacement

  • Basics of how to read scopes, waveforms rgb values

  • What is the difference between additive colour and subtractive colour

  • Skin tone correction

  • Film grain and how or when to use it

  • What file types are recommended

  • Talk about the film look

David Duckworth has been learning the art of colouring since 2019. Training under renowned colourist Dado Valantic in Los Angeles by joining a prestigious remote training program, engaging in intensive Zoom classes for up to six months in many cases.

David's training connected him with industry giants like Walter Volpatto from Company 3 and "Joker" cinematographer Lawrence Sher, enriching his skills and creativity.

Committed to continuous learning, David remains with the academy, ensuring he stays updated with the latest techniques and trends. His teaching philosophy emphasizes sharing knowledge and mentoring new colourists. In small, hands-on classes, he integrates foundational techniques with advanced color theory, providing personalized attention and practical tips.

  • 2 hours, one on one, in studio: working with your specific needs, and utilizing equipment from our rental catalogue.

    Pricing is $149 p/hr +gst per person, based on 2 hour session.

  • We can come to you and talk you through solving lighting or photography challenges. Rates are $245/hr + GST + Travel. Minimum 60mins

  • Developing the next generation of photographers is our heart. Freelance memberships at 921 include 6 hours of after-hour studio access specifically for personal development. Membership is annual, can be started anytime, and is valid for 12 months. Personal Development Hours can be used for any test, portfolio, fine art or personal development shoots. Strictly not for commercial shoots

Alpha Artist talk with Tom Grut (free to attend)

To coincide with NZ Music Month and the annual From The Pit exhibition, Sony NZ will be hosting a free talk by renowned music video director and photographer Tom Grut.

Tom has spent the past nine years working on a dynamic range of projects in the creative world. Being a musician himself, he has a unique and passionate eye for the industry and has worked on projects for artists such as Shapeshifter, Kora, BLK CITY, Jess B, Raiza Biza, The Leers, Mo Muse, Tom Scott, Eleven7four, Balu Brigada and WHOSHOTSCOTT.

Attend this event if you would like to learn how to create powerful and evocative imagery of musicians.

Everyone who attends this event will to go into the draw to win a Sony 64GB Tough UHS-II SD card worth $249!

Getting Started with DaVinci Resolve

About the event
Always wanted to give DaVinci Resolve a go, but don't know where to start? As a previous user of Premiere Pro, Jem understands the challenges facing those considering transitioning to Resolve. This workshop provides participants with the tools they need to feel confident getting started with this fantastic tool.

The workshop's structure will be relatively informal, fostering a space of community and discussion, as he covers basic usage of the various cut, edit, graphic, colour, and audio pages.

Towards the end, there will be additional content for experts, focusing on Resolve's Color Management system. Jem is eager to meet everyone and share his insights and experiences. Looking forward to seeing you there!

About the event
On Tuesday, March 26th, Sony NZ Digital Imaging Specialist Aaron Key will be hosting a test shoot with a rhythmic gymnast and a ballet dancer at Nine Twenty-One Studios in Christchurch. This is the perfect opportunity to try out some of the latest Sony digital imaging equipment - including the brand new Alpha 9 III full-frame camera with global shutter system!

There will be five 30-minute test sessions during the evening:

  • 6:30pm - 7:00pm [SOLD OUT]

  • 7:00pm - 7:30pm

  • 7:30pm - 8:00pm

  • 8:00pm - 8:30pm

  • 8:30pm - 9:00pm

Please pick a time slot that best suits you.

If you already own a Sony Alpha E-mount camera you can bring it with you for a firmware upgrade (if applicable).

Through his counselling, training, and public speaking he helps people enhance their thinking, be proactive in relationships, and thrive in life. 

Richard is the founder and director of Mind Health and has authored two books: Centred: Knowing who you are in an off-balanced world, and There’s a Happy Moon in My Side (children's book).

Get Started with Studio Lighting

WORKSHOP DETAILS - 6:30pm - 8pm

Are you just starting out with strobe studio lighting, or need a refresher? Learn the ropes from an industry professional using top of the line equipment in this workshop at 921 Studios.

We will guide you through everything you need to get started with strobes, including various headshot lighting set ups, and moving through to full length images. Walk away feeling more confident to step into a studio environment and make magic happen.

PORTFOLIO BUILDER - 8:30pm - 10pm

Bring your camera and SD cards! Directly after our workshop we will be hosting a Portfolio Builder. This is your chance to have a play and get creative. We will have various lighting set ups and professional models for you to direct. Participants will be able to photograph all models and use their images for their portfolio.

Get Started with Studio Lighting

Craig (921 Studio Director) will run you through setting up and getting started with Studio Strobes, including various headshot lighting setups, and full length creative images.
This workshop will give you an opportunity to jump on the camera and heaps of time to ask questions.
